Older Adults & Local Volunteers Connect to Combat Social Isolation

Geisinger and the Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA are partnering up to combat social isolation in our region by connecting older adults with local volunteers. The program is called “Friendly Neighbors” and is open to residents of Northumberland, Snyder, and Union Counties. Local volunteers and seniors will be paired based on mutual interests, hobbies, needs, and availability. Volunteers will make weekly connections via phone, letter, and/or home visit with the seniors throughout a 6 to 8 month period to help the seniors feel socially connected and more involved in the local community.

In addition to offering friendship, the volunteers will be asked to identify any additional resources that the seniors might be able to use, such as access to food, housing, and transportation. Rebecca Wagner of the Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA is helping to launch the program.

“This program will allow the GSV YMCA and Geisinger to provide something beautiful to our neighbors. It gives each individual the opportunity to improve upon all aspects of wellness: mental, physical, social, and environmental, through a simple human connection. As we foster these connections, we combat the threat of social isolation,” said Wagner.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a volunteer for the Friendly Neighbors program, contact Rebecca Wagner at rwagner@gsvymca.org or 570-556-4191. Volunteers should be at least 18 years old and will be required to complete YMCA volunteer clearances as well as a Friendly Neighbors Training.
